ICC Ambassadors for 2010 - 2011 announced

The ICC today announced the appointment of five current leaders of cricket as its ambassadors for 2010-2011 which includes ICC's flagship event - the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011.
Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara, England's ICC World Twenty20 2010-winning captain Paul Collingwood, Australia vice-captain Michael Clarke, India vice-captain Virender Sehwag and Simon Taufel of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Umpires have agreed to become ICC Ambassadors for a 12-month period.

As such, these highly respected individuals will be called upon to promote and support a variety of ICC events and initiatives, including the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011, THINKWISE, Spirit of Cricket and the Pepsi ICC Development Programme.

By making appearances at press conferences, social events and coaching clinics, the ICC Ambassadors will also provide valuable support and general awareness of the activities of the ICC and its key stakeholders.

Given the distinguished performances of this elite group of professionals, both on and off the cricket field, and the prestige associated with being appointed an ICC Ambassador, 2010-2011 promises to be an exciting year ahead.

For Sangakkara and Taufel, it is the third successive time that they have been appointed as ICC Ambassadors since the programme was launched in 2008 while Collingwood, Clarke and Sehwag have been appointed for the first time.

Previous ICC Ambassadors include Rahul David (India), JP Duminy (South Africa), Charlotte Edwards (England) and Lisa Sthalekar (Australia).

ICC Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat said: "To have such fantastic personalities who are hugely respected figures within the game give their support to the work we do is reassuring.

"Virender, Michael, Kumar, Paul and Simon have so much to offer and to have access to their valuable time and energy for issues of importance to the ICC is beneficial to the game as a whole," he said.

A knockout format tournament, it will feature 48 corporate teams, each consisting of 6 players along with two substitutes and the opportunity to choose five neutral fielders from a large pool of players.
Playing under the supervision of neutral umpires, the format requires each team to play a limited 5 over innings that needs to be completed in 30 minutes with each player besides the wicket keeper bowling an over. The entire match lasts 70 minutes.
The eight teams that reach the quarter finals will each be assigned a top cricket player, who will play alongside the teams. Speaking at a press conference held in Dubai’s Media Rotana Hotel today, Wasim Akram, former Pakistan captain and Brand Ambassador of Dubai Super Sixes 2010, said that the fast-paced tournament was an excellent opportunity for the region’s most talented sportsmen among the corporate teams to play along with their role models and unite the many local-level sports events under the umbrella of Dubai Sports City.
“Cricket remains a passion for many expatriates in this region and we are pleased to see a growing number of companies putting greater emphasis on supporting this positive trend,” Akram said. “By interacting and playing alongside their role models during the tournament, corporate teams in the region have the opportunity to experience the game as it should be played, under world-class conditions.”
To be held at the majestic Dubai International Cricket Stadium, the 25,000 seater venue offers world-class facilities and promises to add to the enthusiasm of the participants and the international players alike.
“Fresh from the success of our recent event, ‘Cricket Dialogues with Harsha Bhogle’, we are now enlarging our involvement with the sport,” explained Arshad Zaheer, Managing Director of Crayons Communications. “This time round, we are proud to present an innovative concept in cricket which promises to provide all-round entertainment to the contestants, their families and spectators.”

"Look I told you, these guys were plain lucky. Now they have been exposed" - Dhoni

Not sure about familiarity, but success breeds contempt. Throughout this tournament the critics seemed to be waiting for Chennai to stumble so they could have the chance to turn around and say, "Look I told you, these guys were plain lucky. Now they have been exposed". It's not so much an anti-team sentiment, but one against their captain MS Dhoni. Many admire his captaincy; some reckon he is pretty lucky.

Like most successful teams, Chennai did have their share of luck. They had just five days of preparation but the itinerary allowed them to ease into the groove with two facile wins against the two weaker teams in the competition.

In the third game Victoria almost choked but hung on to take the game to a super over where they thumped Chennai. The critics jumped in to savour that moment; Dhoni's luck ran out,' they said. He should have given Doug Bollinger that over, they said, calling it a "messy captaincy decision". Some even speculated that Bollinger had stormed off to the dressing room at the end of that over and that he was not happy with the skipper. The retelling of that story had a malicious glee to it.

Dhoni, though, offered a perfectly plausible reason for using Ashwin. "He is used to bowling in the Powerplays. He is an aggressive bowler, he has the variety and he is always ready to bowl whenever you throw the ball to him. He wants to perform; he has grown as a player over the last three IPLs."
Chennai's next game was against Warriors. There was more ammunition to the 'he is lucky' brigade. Warriors chose to play a game within a game; they needed 109 to qualify and didn't extend themselves too much to try to win the game. They seemed content chasing qualification. The critics said if Warriors had to win to qualify, they would have won the game and shoved Chennai out of the tournament. Maybe, and maybe not. We will never know.
Luck certainly came their way in the next game in the semi-final against Bangalore. The pre-game talk had revolved around how Dale Steyn would harass the Chennai batsmen with his pace and bounce. He didn't bowl a single delivery, stumbling off after suffering concussion on the field. It was a freak event. With Steyn's exit, Bangalore had run out of gunpowder. Game over.
That evening Dhoni said Steyn could have made things tricky for his batsmen but that's not his concern. A reporter said the semi-final was boring. Dhoni's repartee, "So you think we should have run ourselves out?!" It was said with a smile.
Tonight, he was a happy man. He said his plan was to keep the spinners for the middle overs so that they could apply the squeeze, as some of Chennai's seamers weren't quick enough to use the semi-new ball effectively. It worked perfectly.
Sanjay Manjrekar, the former India batsman, nailed the issue perfectly: "Ajit wadekar was also called a lucky captain but when he became India coach in 1993 I realised he had top leadership quality and you realised why he got the results that he did," Manjrekar says. "The same thing with Dhoni. He is a guy who does things that are supposed to be done and leaves the rest to fate. He doesn't try to control everything. That is his greatest strength. If you watch Tendulkar in comparison, he tries to control everything.
"Dhoni that way takes lot of pressure off himself and he is someone who makes his players feel very secure. He is not a guy that you see outwardly making brilliant moves but he is quietly he is always encouraging his bowlers. When a bowler is hit for a six and if he has bowled a good ball, you will quietly see Dhoni applauding the bowler. That's all the bowler needs; that his captain has approved that ball."
At the end of the final, Dhoni was asked for the nth time how he keeps his cool, he said, "There is a dressing room to show your emotions. As a captain, you are as good as your side. This is a very good bunch of people and as a captain you just want to channel all the energy into the same direction. The players put in great effort and frankly it feels very good to be the captain of Chennai Super Kings."
The win was extra-special too, as this will be the last time these particular players turn out for Chennai. "It was indeed a very emotional moment," Dhoni said. "It was the last game for many of us players as a team. However much you try, we can't retain all. These three years were great; we played good cricket. You develop a special bonding with each other. The dressing room atmosphere was great; not everybody could get a game but there was no ill feeling. Every one enjoyed each other's company. To end on a high feels really special."

The International Cricket Council 's chief executives' committee recommended that the number of teams at the Twenty20 World Cup to be increased to 16 teams from the 2012 tournament in Sri Lanka.
They also decided to recommend that the women's World Twenty20 tournament to be run alongside the men's event.
There are plans to create a Twenty20 rankings table as soon as justifiable.
These decision were taken during their two-day meeting in Cape Town and the ICC Borad will now consider the proposals.

Murali wants life ban for fixers

Muttiah Muralitharan, the Sri Lankan offspinner, has become the latest cricketer to call for life bans for those guilty of fixing. Fellow spinning great Shane Warne and New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori had also demanded similarly harsh punishment for cheats after three Pakistan players were provisionally suspended by the ICC for their alleged involvement in spot-fixing during the Lord's Test last month.
"If they are guilty, they should get a life ban, that's the most important thing," Murali told ESPNcricinfo in Centurion ahead of his match for Chennai Super Kings against Wayamba on Wednesday. "The younger generation should not follow that, so the punishment should be harsh if [players] are guilty."
Pakistan's Test captain Salman Butt and fast bowlers Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir were quizzed by police earlier this month for their alleged role in bowling deliberate no-balls during the fourth Test at Lord's between England and Pakistan; an undercover sting operation by the tabloid News of the World apparently revealed that they had done so at the behest of Mazhar Majeed, an agent to the players. Majeed was arrested but released on bail while the players had their mobile phones confiscated. No charges have been pressed against them yet. A fourth Pakistan player, fast bowler Wahab Riaz, was questioned by Scotland Yard on Tuesday.
Players from several other countries including Australia, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka have reported being approached by suspicious characters over the past two years. "The game has to be clean," Murali said. "If somebody gets a life ban doing these things, others will stop doing that. The ICC has to act a lot on this."
On Tuesday, the ICC began a review of the existing anti-corruption measures and was looking at the possibility of engaging with national governments on regulating betting and the system of players' agents.
