#EngvSL : Sri Lanka thrash England at #Durham by 157 runs to level ODI series 1-1<br />
<br />
<br />
Sri Lanka came up with the perfect response to their defeat in the first one-day international against England as they swept aside the home team in the second meeting at the Riverside, Durham on Sunday.<br />
<br />
The England captain, Alastair Cook was injured and could only watch in dismay from the dressing room as optimism generated by their impressive win at The Oval disintegrated in a 157-run defeat.<br />
There was talk of an exciting new era for English cricket after the 81-run win three days earlier, but this was a sobering reminder of recent setbacks as they were destroyed by the Sri Lankans.<br />
The match was effectively settled inside the first seven overs of the England reply to Sri Lanka’s 256-8, a total that owed much to the concentration of Tillakaratne Dilshan in the early stages.<br />
With conditions improving, it was a total that should have been well within England’s reach, but they simply could not cope with the opening spells of Nuwan Kulasekara and Lasith Malinga.<br />
Michael Carberry, recalled because of injury to Cook was the first to go, caught behind by Kumar Sangakkara off the bowling of Kulasekara.<br />
The same pair accounted for the other opening batsman, Ian Bell with the total on 26 and Joe Root swiftly followed, bowled by Malinga before scoring.<br />
When Gary Ballance was lbw to Kulasekara, the Sri Lankan had taken three wickets for one run in 11 deliveries and England were reduced to 29-4.<br />
There was no way back for a team led by Eoin Morgan, although the stand-in skipper and Ravi Bopara finally gave the innings some stability, facing 24 balls without scoring at one stage.<br />
It meant they had added only 17 runs when Bopara was the next to depart, bowled by Sachithra Senanayake.<br />
And the procession continued when Jos Buttler lobbed up the first delivery from Angelo Mathews and Senanayake took an acrobatic catch.<br />
It was the worst shot of an innings with several candidates for that title, reducing England to 55-6 and leaving the new batsman, Chris Jordan, with enough time to show whether he can build an innings as well as score rapid runs.<br />
The answer soon came when he was lbw to Senanayake after scoring just one run in three deliveries. Jordan’s appeal against the decision simply reflected the desperation of the England players.<br />
Morgan remained an obstinate barrier to Sri Lanka and was the main reason they passed their lowest-ever ODI total – 86 against Australia in 2001 — before he was caught on the boundary for 40.<br />
England failed to reach three figures and their total of 99 was their fifth lowest in ODI cricket.<br />
Earlier, Dilshan was the key figure in the Sri Lankan innings when they were put in to bat after losing the toss.<br />
Dilshan was involved in an intriguing battle with James Anderson at at the start of the day as the cloud cover helped the England seam bowler.<br />
Dilshan emerged on top and survived for more than 37 overs to finish with 88 runs before becoming the only victim for Jordan.<br />
Harry Gurney claimed three wickets towards the end of the innings, but Anderson was the pick of the England bowlers and finished with 2-38, including his 250th wicket in ODI cricket.<br />
Ashan Priyanjan added an important 43 runs for the tourists, who set a target of 257 that was never within reach for England because of their feeble batting and the devastating opening burst from Sri Lanka’s pacemen.<br />
Brief Scores:<br />
Sri Lanka 256 for 8 in 50 overs (Tillakaratne Dilshan 88, Ashan Priyanjan 43; James Anderson 2 for 38; Harry Gunrey 3 for 59) beat England 99 all out in 26.1 overs (Eoin Morgan 40; Nuwan Kulasekara 3 for 15, Sachitra Senanayake 4 for 13) by 157 runs.</div>

<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: Roboto, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; letter-spacing: 0.20000000298023224px; padding: 0px 0px 5px;">
Dear Indian fan:</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: Roboto, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; letter-spacing: 0.20000000298023224px; padding: 0px 0px 5px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: Roboto, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; letter-spacing: 0.20000000298023224px; padding: 0px 0px 5px;">
It had hurt us three years back when we saw those videos from Marine Drive and Connaught Place and Park Street from three years back. We, however, did not vow revenge or anything like that (if the team had, they had not let us know). If you had seen our players tonight, they were never arrogant in their celebrations.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: Roboto, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; letter-spacing: 0.20000000298023224px; padding: 0px 0px 5px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: Roboto, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; letter-spacing: 0.20000000298023224px; padding: 0px 0px 5px;">
The team did not have time to plot revenge: there was a time in 2011 <a href="http://www.cricketcountry.com/news/icc-world-t20-2014-sri-lanka-cricket-offer-national-team-incentives-for-reaching-final-122037" style="background-color: transparent; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; box-sizing: border-box; color: #1654c4; outline: 0px; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">when they did not get paid for eight months</a>(yes, they had come runners-up in the World Cup despite that). They were offered proper contracts only in July 2012. The next year Sri Lanka Cricket (<a href="http://www.cricketcountry.com/tag/slc" style="background-color: transparent; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; box-sizing: border-box; color: #1654c4; outline: 0px; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">SLC</a>) had removed the stipulated players’ share from the International Cricket Council (<a href="http://www.cricketcountry.com/tag/icc" style="background-color: transparent; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; box-sizing: border-box; color: #1654c4; outline: 0px; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">ICC</a>) events (25%), and it was only after Sanath Jayasuriya had stepped in that the players had agreed. They were not given the profit: they were only <i style="box-sizing: border-box;">promised</i> they would be given the same.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: Roboto, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; letter-spacing: 0.20000000298023224px; padding: 0px 0px 5px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: Roboto, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; letter-spacing: 0.20000000298023224px; padding: 0px 0px 5px;">
Can you imagine your men playing under such circumstances? No, I guess.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: Roboto, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; letter-spacing: 0.20000000298023224px; padding: 0px 0px 5px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: Roboto, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; letter-spacing: 0.20000000298023224px; padding: 0px 0px 5px;">
It did not end there. Jayasuriya did keep his word; when the players demanded 20% of the profit, he had put their proposal forward to SLC. When SLC had announced the fresh set of contracts, the ICC events share was <i style="box-sizing: border-box;">not</i> a part of it.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: Roboto, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; letter-spacing: 0.20000000298023224px; padding: 0px 0px 5px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: Roboto, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; letter-spacing: 0.20000000298023224px; padding: 0px 0px 5px;">
Take a moment to realise this. Put your men in their shoes. The men have been representing their country in the most high-profile event (and have been turning them into successes; they may not have been winning, but they have not exactly failed either), only to be told by SLC that they would not get a part of the profit from that tournament.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: Roboto, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; letter-spacing: 0.20000000298023224px; padding: 0px 0px 5px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: Roboto, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; letter-spacing: 0.20000000298023224px; padding: 0px 0px 5px;">
This reminded me of international cricket in the pre-Kerry Packer days when players were often told that if they did not want to play for the side there were plenty who would. Your own CK Nayudu, your first Test captain, had done the same to Vinoo Mankad, you may remember.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: Roboto, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; letter-spacing: 0.20000000298023224px; padding: 0px 0px 5px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: Roboto, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; letter-spacing: 0.20000000298023224px; padding: 0px 0px 5px;">
Anyway, four days before the tournament, SLC raised the topic to the Executive Committee. The players were announced incentives, but there were no ICC events shares announced for them. When the players insisted on the shares, SLC issued a threat that they would send a second-string side to the tournament. This happened <i style="box-sizing: border-box;">on the day the players left for Bangladesh</i>. Our heroes had left for the tournament <i style="box-sizing: border-box;">without contracts</i>.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: Roboto, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; letter-spacing: 0.20000000298023224px; padding: 0px 0px 5px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: Roboto, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; letter-spacing: 0.20000000298023224px; padding: 0px 0px 5px;">
You see why we <a href="http://www.cricketcountry.com/articles/yuvraj-singhs-house-stoned-and-we-still-call-india-a-sporting-nation-123194" style="background-color: transparent; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; box-sizing: border-box; color: #1654c4; outline: 0px; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">don’t stone their houses the way you did Yuvraj Singh’s</a> today? The reason is simple: they have been stabbed by their own board; we are the only ones backing them. With no assured contract, almost no Indian Premier League (IPL) contract against their names, with our own version of the IPL getting cancelled, the pride and fans are all they have while taking on the best of the world in a country away from home.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: Roboto, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; letter-spacing: 0.20000000298023224px; padding: 0px 0px 5px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: Roboto, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; letter-spacing: 0.20000000298023224px; padding: 0px 0px 5px;">
That is precisely why we never back out when it comes to supporting them: they have lost one final after the other, but we have never lost hope. Can you believe what you would have done to your men if they had lost four world tournament finals in five years? We had not gone after our players’ blood: instead, we had joked that it was our President’s turning up at the venue midway that had tilted the match West Indies’ way in the 2012 World T20 final.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: Roboto, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; letter-spacing: 0.20000000298023224px; padding: 0px 0px 5px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: Roboto, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; letter-spacing: 0.20000000298023224px; padding: 0px 0px 5px;">
Do you know something? We have grown up in conditions you have seen in newsreels and have read in newspapers, but have never really (I really hope you do not) had real-life brushes. We have grown up in a country where many of us were not sure of our safe return when we left home in the morning.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: Roboto, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; letter-spacing: 0.20000000298023224px; padding: 0px 0px 5px;">
<br /></div>

“Pressure is a Messerschmitt up your arse,” Keith Miller had said once. He had seen death from close quarters. So had we. Which is why defeats do not mean the end of the world for us. In those dark days of internal turmoil,<a href="http://www.cricketcountry.com/tag/Arjuna-Ranatunga" style="background-color: transparent; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; box-sizing: border-box; color: #1654c4; outline: 0px; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">Arjuna Ranatunga</a> and <a href="http://www.cricketcountry.com/tag/aravinda-de-silva" style="background-color: transparent; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; box-sizing: border-box; color: #1654c4; outline: 0px; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">Aravinda de Silva</a> had kept Sri Lankan cricket alive. The 1996 World Cup had a role more significant in our history than you can imagine.</div>

They have given us a lot, and have got hardly anything back in return. The best we could do for them was to turn up in huge numbers and turn the band on, day in and day out. If they won, we were happy; if they did not, we had to accept it. It was like that in the 1980s. It has been like that in the 2010s as well. Three decades ago we used to lose in the league stages; now we lose the finals.</div>

The fact remained that we had not won anything of note barring the 1996 World Cup. Eighteen years have elapsed since that. This win was long due. They have never given up hope in between: they tried, failed, tried, failed, tried, failed, tried, till they succeeded.</div>

Sri Lanka's bowling coach <a href="http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/content/player/50240.html" style="color: #035bac; font-size: 13px; text-decoration: none;">Champaka Ramanayake</a> has brushed aside any concerns about <a href="http://www.espncricinfo.com/commonwealth-bank-series-2012/content/player/49758.html" style="color: #035bac; font-size: 13px; text-decoration: none;">Lasith Malinga</a>'s form, saying that with the number of games Sri Lanka have been involved in Malinga was bound to have a poor game or two. Malinga comes in to the Asia Cup after an inconsistent performance in the Commonwealth Bank series in Australia, in which he was the leading wicket-taker with 18 scalps in 11 games but went at 6.21 runs per over.</div>
<div class="news-body" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Tahoma; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; margin-bottom: 12px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">

Ramanayake discovered Malinga when Malinga was bowling for his college in Galle, mentored him at Sri Lanka's cricket academy and describes Malinga as his "rock". He said conditions in Australia and the fact that Sri Lanka had such a packed schedule there - they played five games in 10 days at the end of the tournament - affected Malinga.</div>
<div class="news-body" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Tahoma; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; margin-bottom: 12px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">

"In Australia there was not much reverse swing, so he struggled a bit," Ramanayake told reporters at the team hotel in Dhaka. "So I hope he'll learn new tricks. He's okay; everyone can have a bad game or two when you play 11 games in such a short time."</div>

Dilshan hammered 67 from his final 23 deliveries, a sequence that effectively decided the match.</div><div class="news-body" style="color: #333333; font-weight: normal; line-height: 19px; margin-bottom: 12px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;"></div><div class="news-body" style="color: #333333; font-weight: normal; line-height: 19px; margin-bottom: 12px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;">The Australians' chase was undone by the flat offspin of the debutant Dilruwan Perera (3-26), who provided a reminder there is plenty of slow bowling depth for the Sri Lankans to utilise across the limited overs and Test series to take place through August and September. Rangana Herath (1-11) also posed plenty of problems, much as he had done on his debut against the Australians on their 1999 visit to the island.</div><div class="news-body" style="color: #333333; font-weight: normal; line-height: 19px; margin-bottom: 12px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;"></div><div class="news-body" style="color: #333333; font-weight: normal; line-height: 19px; margin-bottom: 12px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;">Dilshan's was exactly the kind of opening statement a captain desires to make, providing plenty of evidence the Australians will be up against a feisty opponent on this tour. They will also need to sharpen their fielding, as fumbles were a recurring theme of the team's first international since a limited overs series in Bangladesh in April.</div><div class="news-body" style="color: #333333; font-weight: normal; line-height: 19px; margin-bottom: 12px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;"></div><div class="news-body" style="color: #333333; font-weight: normal; line-height: 19px; margin-bottom: 12px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;">Mitchell Johnson, John Hastings and Shane Watson were all taken for more than 11 runs per over, while curiously the spin of Steve O'Keefe and Steve Smith was not fully utilised despite offering a greater level of economy than any of the faster men.</div><div class="news-body" style="color: #333333; font-weight: normal; line-height: 19px; margin-bottom: 12px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;"></div><div class="news-body" style="color: #333333; font-weight: normal; line-height: 19px; margin-bottom: 12px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;">By contrast the Sri Lankans employed three spin bowlers in their defence of the target, and in truth no-one other than the belligerent David Warner (53) ever looked comfortable enough to impose serious pressure on the home attack.</div><div class="news-body" style="color: #333333; font-weight: normal; line-height: 19px; margin-bottom: 12px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;"></div><div class="news-body" style="color: #333333; font-weight: normal; line-height: 19px; margin-bottom: 12px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;">Needing 10 runs an over virtually from the start, Australia's reply was inconvenienced by the early swing of Nuwan Kulasekara (2-39), who found a way through Watson in the third over. Warner was soon finding the boundary, and on one occasion cleared it with a line drive over the bowler's head.</div><div class="news-body" style="color: #333333; font-weight: normal; line-height: 19px; margin-bottom: 12px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;"></div><div class="news-body" style="color: #333333; font-weight: normal; line-height: 19px; margin-bottom: 12px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;">Shaun Marsh was less settled, and misread the first over from the debutant Perera to be lbw for four. David Hussey appeared fortunate that no-one on the field was fully alert to an apparent thin edge behind off the bowling of Dhammika Prasad, but next over he was nowhere near a sharp off break from Perera that tilted middle stump.</div><div class="news-body" style="color: #333333; font-weight: normal; line-height: 19px; margin-bottom: 12px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;"></div><div class="news-body" style="color: #333333; font-weight: normal; line-height: 19px; margin-bottom: 12px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;">Cameron White managed only one boundary before he too was defeated by a Perera offbreak that straightened from around the wicket, and at 63 for 4 Australia's chase was looking decidedly sick. It deteriorated further when Steven Smith was utterly confused by Herath and stumped, while Dilshan had the luxury of dropping Warner then being able to accept another chance. O'Keefe and Johnson provided nuisance value, but by then the equation would have been too steep even for Dilshan.</div><div class="news-body" style="color: #333333; font-weight: normal; line-height: 19px; margin-bottom: 12px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;"></div><div class="news-body" style="color: #333333; font-weight: normal; line-height: 19px; margin-bottom: 12px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;">Brett Lee had shared the new ball with the left-arm spinner O'Keefe in a nod to a surface that offered some bounce but also turn. Mahela Jayawardene managed a pair of crisp boundaries to long-on and backward point, but in the third over squirted a Lee yorker into his stumps.</div><div class="news-body" style="color: #333333; font-weight: normal; line-height: 19px; margin-bottom: 12px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;"></div><div class="news-body" style="color: #333333; font-weight: normal; line-height: 19px; margin-bottom: 12px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;">Dilshan immediately took the attack to Lee, following a top-edged hook for six with an artful glide through gully for four, meaning the over reaped 14 runs as well as a wicket. He then sought to unsettle Johnson with a series of impudent gestures. Dinesh Chandimal also made a bright start, but on 11 was hurried onto the back foot by Johnson's pace and slid ungracefully into his wicket - only the fifth such dismissal in T20 internationals, its rarity underlined by the bowler's miffed reaction.</div><div class="news-body" style="color: #333333; font-weight: normal; line-height: 19px; margin-bottom: 12px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;"></div><div class="news-body" style="color: #333333; font-weight: normal; line-height: 19px; margin-bottom: 12px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;">Tensions were evident between Dilshan and Watson, the Australian firing a return throw towards the batsman, who fended it away with a glove. A curious appeal by the Australians posed the question about obstruction, as the game's laws have been changed to disallow any by a batsman out of his crease, but the umpires waved it away.</div><div class="news-body" style="color: #333333; font-weight: normal; line-height: 19px; margin-bottom: 12px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;"></div><div class="news-body" style="color: #333333; font-weight: normal; line-height: 19px; margin-bottom: 12px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;">Kumar Sangakkara cracked boundaries over mid-off and square leg to raise a 50 stand with Dilshan, but the next over he flicked ineffectually at a Watson slower ball and handed a simple catch to Cameron White. Mendis announced himself with a reverse-swept boundary from the bowling of Smith, then gave a passing impression of no less a left-hander than Sangakkara himself with a pull shot of some flourish when Watson dropped fractionally short.</div><div class="news-body" style="color: #333333; font-weight: normal; line-height: 19px; margin-bottom: 12px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;"></div><div class="news-body" style="color: #333333; font-weight: normal; line-height: 19px; margin-bottom: 12px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;">John Hastings' slower balls were losing their novelty, and Dilshan took a heavy toll by swinging thrice to the legside for boundaries either side of an exceptionally cheeky reverse-dab past short third man - the over was worth 20.</div><div class="news-body" style="color: #333333; font-weight: normal; line-height: 19px; margin-bottom: 12px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;"></div><div class="news-body" style="color: #333333; font-weight: normal; line-height: 19px; margin-bottom: 12px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;">Mendis and Dilshan tormented the Australians in the closing overs, piling up 67 runs from overs 15-18 to turn a middling total into an intimidating one. Too often the touring bowlers missed the yorker length, and when they did strike it Dilshan's wrists were supple enough to send the ball skidding through gully to the rope.</div><div class="news-body" style="color: #333333; font-weight: normal; line-height: 19px; margin-bottom: 12px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;"></div><div class="news-body" style="color: #333333; font-weight: normal; line-height: 19px; margin-bottom: 12px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;">On 84 when the final over began, Dilshan cracked a pair of sixes then mis-scooped a boundary to go to three figures, before adding another to take the Sri Lankans to the cusp of 200 - a total they would not have contemplated at 94-3. Australia's bowlers, and batsmen, have the task ahead of them.</div><div class="news-body" style="color: #333333; font-weight: normal; line-height: 19px; margin-bottom: 12px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;"><br />

Having taken a total of 1347 wickets in all international cricket so far, he will be hoping to put even more daylight between himself and the chasing pack. Second-placed Shane Warne is the only other player with more than a thousand, and the leading other current player is Brett Lee with “only” 676. If Murali's total of wickets is unlikely to be broken, how has he performed in the Reliance Mobile ICC Player Rankings over the course of his long career?</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20px;"> </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20px;"><br />
</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20px;"><br />
</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20px;">Having made his Test debut in August 1992, his first three years brought him 81 wickets in 23 Tests at a respectable average of 33.88, but gave no real indication of the huge strides he was to make later in his career. However, 42 wickets in his next seven Tests propelled him to his first appearance in the top ten, which came in June 1997. At that time, the top four bowlers were all pacemen - Curtly Ambrose and Glenn McGrath led the way, tied on 861 points each, followed by Allan Donald and Wasim Akram. Murali had 715 points, but the only way was up from then onwards.</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20px;"> </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20px;"><br />
</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20px;"><br />
</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20px;">It was another five years before Murali first hit the top spot, after taking 9-51 and 4-64 against Zimbabwe at Kandy in January 2002. That first innings was the occasion when he nearly made cricket history. Having taken all nine Zimbabwe wickets to fall on the first day's play, he had Travis Friend dropped by Russel Arnold at silly-point the following morning to narrowly miss becoming just the third bowler to take all ten wickets in a Test innings.</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20px;"> </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20px;"><br />
</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20px;"><br />
</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20px;">That haul took him past Glenn McGrath at the top of the bowling rankings with a total of 907 points, and he scarcely dropped from the rarefied air of the 900-point mark for the next six and a half years. His peak came in July 2007 when he reached 920 points after taking 6-28 and 6-54 against Bangladesh at Kandy, a points tally only surpassed by three bowlers in the history of the game - Sydney Barnes, George Lohmann and Imran Khan. However, Murali's total set a new record for a spinner - going past Tony Lock's 912 points from 1958.</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20px;"> </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20px;"><br />
</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20px;"><br />
</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20px;">He spent a total of 1711 days as the top-rated Test bowler - a fair way down the list, but it should be noted that far more Test Matches are played now than in previous generations. This places him 13th on that particular list, which is headed by Bill O'Reilly - who had the Second World War to boost him up to 3643 days on top.</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20px;"> </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20px;"><br />
</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20px;"><br />
</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20px;">However, when we examine the number of Tests each bowler has spent in the number one position, Murali's total of 214 puts him on top. In fact the leading thee bowlers in this respect are all modern-day players, with Glenn McGrath (174 matches) and Curtly Ambrose (145 matches) filling the next two spaces on that list. By contrast, O'Reilly was top for just 24 matches.</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20px;"> </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20px;"><br />
</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20px;"><br />
</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20px;">Murali made his ODI debut a year after his first Test appearance and his first 21 matches brought just 19 wickets at a cost of 40 runs apiece. He came to the fore as Sri Lanka triumphed in ICC Cricket World Cup 1996 in the Subcontinent, and his star rapidly rose in the shorter form of the game at the same time. He first cracked the top ten in early 1997 during a successful series in Sharjah, and he spent the vast majority of the next 12 years in the world's top ten.</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20px;"> </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20px;"><br />
</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20px;"><br />
</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20px;">It was October 2000 when he first sneaked above Glenn McGrath and made it to top spot in the Reliance Mobile ICC Player Rankings for ODI bowlers. His figures of 7-30 against India at Sharjah were a world record for ODI cricket at the time and took him to 851 points. Two days later he took 3-6 in six overs against the same opposition to rise even further to 880 points, and he didn't move out of the top three for the next five years.</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20px;"> </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20px;"><br />
</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20px;"><br />
</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20px;">However, unlike his domination of the Test bowling rankings, this period provided a large amount of tussling for positions at the top. From the time Murali first reached number one to when he finally relinquished it in October 2004, a number of other bowlers also enjoyed top spot. In fact, that period could well be considered one of the golden eras of ODI bowling with the Sri Lankan maestro having to share the limelight with Shaun Pollock, Glenn McGrath and team-mate Chaminda Vaas.</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20px;"> </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20px;"><br />
</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20px;"><br />
</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20px;">Murali's peak points tally came in April 2002 when he had the astonishing figures of 10-3-9-5 against New Zealand at Sharjah. That performance propelled him up to 913 points, which is the fourth-highest achieved by anyone since ODI cricket started in 1971. Only Joel Garner (941), Richard Hadlee (924) and Shaun Pollock (917) have ever acquired more points, and by way of a comparison, today's top-ranked bowler Daniel Vettori has a total of 701.</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20px;"> </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20px;"><br />
</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20px;"><br />
</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20px;">Despite this fierce competition for the top spot, Murali spent a total of 244 matches and 731 days at the top ranked bowler in ODI cricket. Whereas these are a fair way behind the respective leaders in those fields - Shaun Pollock (844 matches) and Curtly Ambrose (2057 days) - this represents a massive contribution given that he hardly ever had the opportunity to enjoy the new ball.</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20px;"> </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20px;"><br />
</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20px;"><br />
</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20px;">By his own incredibly high standards, Murali's returns in One Day cricket in 2009 and 2010 were fairly modest, and it may have appeared as if his powers were somewhat on the wane as the effort of bowling more than 60 thousand deliveries in international cricket began to take its toll. But he roared back into action in ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 as 11 wickets in four matches helped Sri Lanka reach its third final.</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20px;"> </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20px;"><br />
</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20px;"><br />
</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20px;">It would only be fair to make a passing mention of his batting. Always unorthodox, but occasionally very effective, he boasts 1261 Test runs and even has a fifty to his name with an innings of 67 against India at Kandy in 2001. He never quite made it into the world's top 100 in Test cricket, peaking at 102nd late in his career in 2009 after an innings of 29 against India at Kanpur.</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20px;"> </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20px;"><br />
</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20px;"><br />
</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20px;">With fewer batting opportunities in ODI cricket, he peaked early in his career with 266 points and 112th position late in 1998. However, he was responsible for winning at least a couple of matches for Sri Lanka with the bat - notably against Bangladesh at Mirpur in early 2009 and against Australia at Melbourne in late 2010.</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20px;"><br />
</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20px;"><br />
</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20px;">And so he takes his leave from the international stage as the top wicket-taker in both Test and One Day International cricket, will we ever see his like again? Possibly not, but one of the joys of cricket is that we never know quite what is around the corner and records are always there to be broken.</span>DKhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12115073571858620875noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6714229554651961562.post-1952327054736707132011-07-06T22:41:00.000+05:302011-07-06T22:41:38.094+05:30Skipper of T-20 , Left Out from the ODI's for Sri Lanka Tour....<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-GIia4z9Sk8aLka8ofZKUAgT3ZZ3kKMFz7oRZFZITIyYzNMvN9iT64VeaYUaeZp7HFkSt_0FhjY8_iMX8HL53Glijezp9cxAUB3Z7hJOSMar_p9ij0R0MkdA4xP7YcJMzMg03OLkVmtnP/s1600/images.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-GIia4z9Sk8aLka8ofZKUAgT3ZZ3kKMFz7oRZFZITIyYzNMvN9iT64VeaYUaeZp7HFkSt_0FhjY8_iMX8HL53Glijezp9cxAUB3Z7hJOSMar_p9ij0R0MkdA4xP7YcJMzMg03OLkVmtnP/s1600/images.jpg" /></a></div>Australian T 20 Skipper Cameron Leon White has been left out from ODI squad for Sri Lanka tour on August....<br />

With majority of AIDS affected people living in cricket playing countries, our roles become that much more important. Also the fact that we support people with HIV and AIDS, so that they can lead a fruitful life so that they can access good life. More and more cricketers should be associated with it. Tillakaratne told a television program earlier this month that match fixing has been rampant in Sri Lanka since 1992, then on Tuesday made a statement reaffirming his allegations to the Western Provincial Council, where he is elected to office. “I made a statement to the provincial council, I said that I still maintain my stand on the (match fixing) allegations,” said Tillakaratne, who declined to reveal the names of those involved following legal advise. “After I came out with these allegations I have been getting a lot of nuisance calls, death threats, but definitely I will expose all those who are involved in a time to come,” he said.<br />
Within hours of his comments Tuesday, he was questioned by police for an hour.<br />
Ganguly back in IPL<br />
Former India cricket captain Sourav Ganguly, who found no takers at this year’s Indian Premier League player auction, has been signed up by struggling franchise Pune Warriors. Ganguly, who played for his home team Kolkata in the first three editions of the tournament, replaces the injured Ashish Nehra ahead of Pune’s game against table-toppers Mumbai Indians Wednesday.<br />
Flower renews contract<br />
Andy Flower has signed a new contract to remain in the role of England team director, the England and Wales Cricket Board confirmed Tuesday. The former Zimbabwe captain, 43, took over from Peter Moores in January 2009 and has since guided the team to two Ashes series wins and World T20 glory.<br />
Yusuf shines in Kolkata’s win<br />
India all-rounder Yusuf Pathan clobbered a quick-fire 47 not out off 26 deliveries as Kolkata Knight Riders scored a comfortable 20-run victory over Deccan Chargers to move up in the IPL points table Tuesday.<br />
The No. 4 batsman produced some lusty hits and was involved in a crucial 80-run stand with Manoj Tiwary (33) that helped Kolkata score a challenging 169-4 on a sporting Rajiv Gandhi Stadium pitch.<br />
The home side’s reply ended at 149-6, with opener Shikhar Dhawan top-scoring with 54.<br />
The win took Kolkata to joint first position with 12 points from nine games. Mumbai Indians also has 12 points but in only eight games. The Kumar Sangakkara-led Deccan Chargers remained in seventh place with six points from nine games.<br />

Six national captains, including four from Sri Lanka, Sanath Jayasuriya, Mahela Jayawardane, Kumar Sangakkara and T. M. Dilshan, will lead seven Provincial teams in the forthcoming Sri Lanka T20-Premier League (SL-T20-PL) Tournament.<br />
<br />
The seventh captain will be former Sri Lanka vice-captain, Chaminda Vaas. The Sri Lanka T20 Premier League will feature almost 35 international cricketing stars and will be the first of its kind in Sri Lanka.<br />
The event organisrs, Somerert Entertainment Ventures (SEV) have found a window for the tournament which is sandwiched between Sri Lanka's tour of England and Australia's tour of Sri Lanka.<br />
<br />
The event will kick off on July 15th and will go on for 18 days. Twenty four hotly contested matches, including the two semi-finals and the final, will be played at the R. Premadasa Stadium. There will be two matches on certain days.<br />
<br />
<br />
Dashing opener T. M. Dilshan will lead Basnahira while Kumar Sangakkara (Kandurata), Mahela Jayawardane (Wayamba), Sanath Jayasuriya (Ruhuna) and Chaminda Vaas (Uva) will be the other captains.<br />
<br />
Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi (Nagenahira) and New Zealand skipper Daniel Vettori (Uthura) have been chosen to lead two provinces that were isolated from the game for ages due to the civil war.<br />
<br />
Five overseas players could be registered to a provincial team but only four will be allowed to play in a match. Sri Lankan national selectors and cricket authorities have agreed to blood as many youngsters and almost 70 Sri Lankan cricketers will be registered in the seven team tournament.<br />
<br />
Almost all Pakistani national cricketers will be invited to play in the SLPL. Factually, Sri Lanka was Pakistan's adopted home in the 2011 Cricket World Cup concluded last month as they played all their first round matches in Sri Lanka.<br />
<br />
In addition to that, Chris Gayle and the Bravo cousins (Dwayne and Darren) from West Indies, Pathan brothers (Irfan and Yousuf) from India, Herschelle Gibbs, David Warner and Shaun Tait will be seen in action on Sri Lankan soil.<br />
<br />
The availability of retired great Muttiah Muralitharan is not yet confirmed but some unconfirmed sources revealed that he is eager to play in the series.<br />
<br />
Milind Rege, the tournament manager of the 2011 cricket World Cup will be in charge of all cricketing matters of the tournament. Rege is a former Ranji Trophy captain for Mumbai and recently retired from TATA corporation as a managing committee member.<br />

Sri Lanka's Tillakaratne Dilshan said on Wednesday he had ditched his blond streaks as well as his earring to present a more sober image in his new role as national captain.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqYjGnlkSfl3E-7-W_NFdIS-RUs6Y3GmXmsYUCJnm1xFYN5GDs9knyGpqstEhKYC1CqBt6BrTMa_bH0EKYaqXrZCgk-h1rZSUqTFKtN5pnsbQtz-MWp57IfnqbbVgWXhT-chyphenhyphenHB7-JvdzJ/s1600/dil1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="285" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqYjGnlkSfl3E-7-W_NFdIS-RUs6Y3GmXmsYUCJnm1xFYN5GDs9knyGpqstEhKYC1CqBt6BrTMa_bH0EKYaqXrZCgk-h1rZSUqTFKtN5pnsbQtz-MWp57IfnqbbVgWXhT-chyphenhyphenHB7-JvdzJ/s320/dil1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
The 34-year-old has dyed his blond highlights back to black and removed his earring after selectors gave him the captaincy following the resignation of Kumar Sangakkara after the team's runners-up spot at the World Cup.<br />
<br />
"Times have changed. I pierced my ear when my daughter cried when her ears were being pierced," he said during a brief two-day visit to Colombo from Indian Premier League duties. Dilshan plays for IPL franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkCtgGTfOcsmOzKH0VvWzcM2hpsX5U_afXp-AptYz9DKYLekSDYexR1Zi7Tn5Ax44KBx5624SDbcYVj0P88dLa24BJQnowzWGRYbGbpk1g-r4tbyLjBSXGK6vy9flg24VY03L3syDAyzOD/s1600/dil2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkCtgGTfOcsmOzKH0VvWzcM2hpsX5U_afXp-AptYz9DKYLekSDYexR1Zi7Tn5Ax44KBx5624SDbcYVj0P88dLa24BJQnowzWGRYbGbpk1g-r4tbyLjBSXGK6vy9flg24VY03L3syDAyzOD/s320/dil2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
"Now I don't see a need to wear the earring. The same with my hair. It was fashionable then for me, it's not so now," he said while his actress wife Manjula Thilini smiled sitting in the audience.<br />
Dilshan, famous for his signature scoop shot, said he hoped to continue his aggressive batting style when he leads the team on next month's tour of England.<br />
<br />
"I'm a bit aggressive. Perhaps I will sometimes change my style a bit. But I might play with it (aggressiveness) even as a captain," the opening batsman said. "Captaincy is a challenging role for me. It's a dream come true. I never expected it," said the father of two.<br />
<br />
"I want to give it my best shot. I have played for nearly 12 years. It's been a very long journey to the top," said Dilshan, who led Sri Lanka to a win in a triangular one-day series in Zimbabwe, which also included India.<br />
<br />
He had an excellent World Cup, where he was the tournament's highest scorer with 500 runs from nine matches at an average of 62.50.<br />

<br />
Sri Lanka Cricket sources also said that the new Selection Committee will meet shortly to select a suitable successor to the Kumara Sangakkara as the team is scheduled to tour England in May.<br />

The Sources have confirmed also that the Sri Lanka cricket authorities are willing to appoint him as a captain for next two years and later on transfer it to 23 year all rounder Angelo Mathews.<br />
<br />
As per year 2015, Cricket World Cup Leadership Preparation, authorities are also considering appointing Angelo Mathews as a Vice Captain.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://p.imgci.com/db/PICTURES/CMS/64600/64628.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://p.imgci.com/db/PICTURES/CMS/64600/64628.jpg" width="235" /></a></div>Former Sri Lanka batsman, Marvan Atapattu is likely to be the new batting coach of Kumar Sangakkara's team. This was revealed by the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) chairman D.S. de Silva.<br />
<br />
Speaking exclusively to this scribe, he said, "Atapattu has shown interest to be associated with the team and therefore we are considering him to be the batting coach of our national team. We have Champaka Ramanayaka as bowling coach and Ruwan Kalpage as fielding coach and we were looking for a good batting coach and Marwan may be the "ideal choice" for the post.<br />
<br />
The former Sri Lanka captain, Atapattu, towards the end of his career joined the Indian Cricket League (ICL) and captained the Delhi Giants. He also has experience of coaching the Singapore national team. <br />
<br />
Atapattu was one of the most technically correct batsmen that Sri Lanka had ever produced. Making his Test debut in November 1990 just after his 20th birthday, his first six innings yielded five ducks and a 1, but supporters insisted that his debut-innings duck put him in good company with batsmen such as Michael Atherton, Graham Gooch, Len Hutton, Saeed Anwar and Wasim Akram, who all made debut-innings ducks but went on to score at least 2500 Test runs. <br />
<br />
He was controversially left out of the squad for the 2007 Cricket World Cup, and as a result, asked for his removal from the list of Sri Lanka contracted players. Interestingly, Atapattu was to miss the 2007-08 tour of Australia, but was added to the squad after the intervention of the then Sri Lankan Sports Minister Gamini Lokuge. Atapattu played solidly in the first Test, but subsequently angrily labelled the selectors: "A set of Muppets, basically, headed by a joker," at a post-stumps press conference. <br />
<br />
He is one of the few international batsmen who has scored centuries against all Test-playing nations.<br />
Married to Neluni, and a father of two daughters, Atapattu, an accountant by profession was a good fielder too.<br />

<br />
"We are superior in talent to Australia, but it is the character and the fighting spirit which we must inculcate in our players," de Silva, vice-captain of the 1996 World Cup-winning Sri Lankan team, told reporters.<br />
<br />
A three-member Sri Lankan selection committee led by de Silva quit on Wednesday, less than a week after the team's defeat against <span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #336797;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="cursor: pointer;">India</span></span> in the <span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #336797;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="cursor: pointer;">World Cup</span></span> final in<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #336797;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="cursor: pointer;">Mumbai</span></span>.<br />
<br />
De Silva, who scored 6,361 runs in Tests and 9,284 in one-day internationals, said he felt players became "emotional" during the final as the match tilted in India's favour.<br />
<br />
"Maybe they were thinking about lost opportunities and became emotional," he said. "This is the difference between an Australian side and ours. They don't give up the match until the last ball is bowled.<br />
<br />
"They (Sri Lanka) should know how to fight until the last ball and not to give up the game. These are the things that we don't have in our culture."<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQUndGEJOIqGsSQdvQdoSvveCUaT3XjXVE2I7sszsMJ0sXAFWqA57xA-hUBv4uEsypPnuCD558eDsD8wfM8kyQHgfZReTop64RdmXiMttvXux2o44-nNzxX_0I-PzieQlSe0kwyrALfNhu/s1600/Mahela_Jayawardene.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQUndGEJOIqGsSQdvQdoSvveCUaT3XjXVE2I7sszsMJ0sXAFWqA57xA-hUBv4uEsypPnuCD558eDsD8wfM8kyQHgfZReTop64RdmXiMttvXux2o44-nNzxX_0I-PzieQlSe0kwyrALfNhu/s320/Mahela_Jayawardene.jpg" width="222" /></a></div><br />
A state television broadcast suggested Jayawardene deliberately played badly for financial gain in Saturday's Cricket World Cup defeat by Pakistan. <br />
<br />
Jayawardene said his lawyer was drafting a letter to "get to the bottom" of the accusation. <br />
<br />
The allegation was also levelled at batsman Thilan Samaraweera. <br />
<br />
Sri Lanka lost the game against Pakistan by 11 runs, with Jaywardene scoring two runs while Samaraweera scored one. <br />
<br />
A commentary on Sunday on Sri Lankan state TV network, ITN, written by the editor of a state newspaper, Mahinda Abeysundara, said a businessman had bet about 18,000 dollars on a Pakistan victory and that there had therefore been what he called a "chorus to change the game". <br />
<br />
The commentator then remarked: "We just think Mahela and Thilan may have changed the game." <br />
The commentary was accompanied by slow-motion extracts from the match, sad music and blurry shots implying financial impropriety. <br />
<br />
Leaving comments on social networking sites such as Facebook, Sri Lankan fans have expressed outrage at the broadcast. <br />
<br />
One said: "How dare you tell that Mahela and Thilan are betrayers... this is so disgusting." <br />
Another called the coverage "shameless". <br />
<br />
Sri Lanka will face Kenya at the cricket World Cup on Tuesday.<br />
